Time to Act on Practice Nurses

For better wages and conditions

Historic application filed on behalf of practice nurses by ANF. In 2011, the ANF filed an application with Fair Work Australia as the first formal step in seeking to improve the wages and working conditions of nursing staff employed in medical centres and clinics.  The ANF is seeking to engage with employers in an effort to convince them to reach enterprise bargaining agreements with their practice nurses that will:

  • provide fair wages and reasonable conditions of employment;
  • introduce a new classification and career path that rewards increased responsibilities;
  • provide support for practice nurse education and professional development;

Medical clinics must recognise that the nurses they employ deserve fair wages, and to bargain with the ANF to achieve wages and working conditions that reflect the nursing labour market.

Practice Nurse Facts

The number of practice nurses in Australia continues to rise with more than 9000 nurses employed in general practices, up from 5000 in 2005, with around 60 per cent of GP clinics now employing one practice  nurse.

 

General practice nursing is one of the fastest growing areas in the health and community service sectors, and the numbers are expected to increase by 500 each year.
